Retail

 The Problem

The waste generated from Retail is derived from unsold garments, returned garments (online and offline), and garments damaged in store.

One Solution

ApparelXchange CIC is a Glasgow-based social enterprise dedicated to reuse, repair and recycling for childrenswear. Families can shop secondhand with us, donate clothing, and receive free clothing from us when times are challenging. We also offer support to schools so that we can share education opportunities and grow greener together.

About the Solution

ApparelXchange accepts all donations (uniform, casualwear, footwear and accessories) which we then review, repair and resell. Our retail income supports our reduced cost clothing package services for families experiencing hardship. We are proud to be working with an increasing network of public, private and third sector organisations to support those within their services on an ongoing basis.

AXC are creating a sustainable business model that gives value to reuse clothing - one that can survive by using a problem (mass overconsumption of fashion) to provide a local solution for consumers (financial hardship in communities leads to kids in ill-fitting garments).

We continue this work by partnering with schools, enabling clothing reuse and recycling to be part of daily life and providing education opportunities to enrich these activities. We are now elevating our school work by introducing our own resources, and monthly Fair Fashion updates for educators.

Triple Bottom Line

Sustainability Impact Measurements

Environmental: In total, ApparelXchange has diverted approximately 26,000 garments from landfill, saving 120,555 CO2eq tonnage from being emitted through reuse.

Social: We have provided 407 clothing packages enabling young people inclusive access to education, sports and social activities.

Economic: We demonstrate that secondhand retail has the ability to reduce costs significantly for families purchasing clothing and footwear for their young people.
