Use

 The Problem

The waste generated from Use is derived from used and worn garments.

~17.30
MILLION

tonnes of textile waste generated globally per year which is the equivalent volume of 38 x Inex Sipoo, Finland (World’s 7th largest building).

$13.44
MILLION

waste value. Equivalent to increasing the number of textile and garment workers in China by 58,159 per year.

 One Solution

Sustainable Fashion Scotland (SFS) is a community-led initiative connecting the fashion community in Scotland and accelerating collective action for a sustainable fashion transformation. We explore through practice and data-driven research how communities and multi-stakeholder collaborations (business, government, third sector etc.) can unlock local potential working together towards a place-based shared vision.

About the Solution

Systemic change in fashion requires collective action from all stakeholders, not just consumers. We engage diverse perspectives to decentralise power and redistribute wealth within fashion in Scotland. This enables equitable access to participation and marginalised voices to be heard. To achieve this, our time is split between two mutually supportive programs:

Community empowerment:

We value transparent knowledge exchange because we believe in collaboration over competition. This creates space for innovative ideas and impactful collaborations to emerge between various actors (business, government, academia, activists, etc.).

Systemic research:

By immersing ourselves in the community and gathering insights directly from fashion practitioners, we map out a holistic data-driven understanding of the fashion landscape. We then identify impactful opportunities for collective action and change, and invite stakeholders to get involved.

Investment in network initiatives that pursue long-term indirect impact is crucial to manage the complexities of sustainability challenges and accelerate transformative change.

Triple Bottom Line

Sustainability Impact Measurements

Environmental: Through collaborative education initiatives, we can expect up to a 30% reduction in carbon, water and waste footprint from people extending the life of their garments.

Social: Connected SFS network members report feeling less isolated and empowered to organise local collective action to tackle the climate crisis in their communities.

Economic: By unlocking access to knowledge, skills, and resources, we redistribute power and agency, increasing the sustainable fashion community’s capacity to thrive.

WORLD LEADERS,
ACT NOW

Planet: Investment in holistic education on the impact of our actions and clothing decisions, including practical skills development in schools.

People: We call on YOU as a consumer to repair what you wear; value secondhand; rent or share garments; buy less, buy better; ask who made your clothes and how much they were paid; only support brands who are ethical and transparent; and responsibly recycle your clothing.
